Winter Photography with Stephen DesRoches a photographer based in Prince Edward Island.

We share this planet with a vast variety of other living things and photography is a gift to help see and think more intently about the environment we live in. Cherish, preserve, appreciate, conserve, defend, and protect are some of the words I associate with the responsibility of outdoor photography.

Photography can and should be about much more than taking pictures. It encourages us to stop and take that second look at our surroundings. It forces us away from digital screens and it encourages adventure. It is about memories, experiences, and the preservation of time.

I wanted to be a painter but traded in my paints and brushes for photographic equipment 20 years ago. The tools may now be different but my end goal to create remains all the same.

Keeping photography fun is an exciting task. Endless resources of information and much to learn without any pressure or expectations. The idea of recording the world onto single frames is an exercise that forces a closer look at light, colours, and shapes. Either it be at home or the occasional travel to much larger destinations, a camera in hand has become as common as carrying identification. The desire to become better is stronger than ever but at the end of each day; it’s still all for fun.
